I met Shawn through a friend of mine, Brian Corrigan. His words were “he needs a white board sometimes to think” and I was sold. When he told me that Shawn went through the academy to be a Medic on the SWAT team for Richmond Police because he wanted to, I could only be in awe of someone so dedicated to saving lives. We share a similar vision with of the Disaster Preparedness response, or lack thereof, from the Hurricane Helene catastrophe. Also in the field of wellness, a topic on the forefront in EVERY First Responder agency nationally, Shaun shares a passion to help people.
I met Dr. Trent through an intern on a project for which I worked. I was invited to Liberty to teach at the Command College for Law Enforcement. I was able to speak to Dr. Trent about my vision for the future of VCPA-TTAC. As a former Roanoke City Officer, she had the same vision of the assistance I wanted to provide to small and rural agencies that are often overlooked for funding, though small agencies (25 men or less) make up 85% of law enforcement in the Commonwealth. A lot of the small agencies are unable to compete for funding due to lack of grant writing expertise and the fact they are unable, again due to manpower, to become Accredited. Why is that important? Because being a state accredited agency gets their application an automatic 10 points. So, to even the field, we talked about assisting smaller agencies through the state accreditation process utilizing students at Liberty, some of the best, brightest, and faithful students in the Commonwealth. Eager to learn, to be a resource, and outpace us in technology, this partnership with Liberty and Dr. Trent can only produce GREAT things!
Scott has been a trainer and personal friend for about 30 years. He was with the Chesterfield Police Department and had an impressive career. As a community policing officer, Crime Prevention Specialists, Scout Sniper with the SWAT Team, Detective in Special Victims Unit, and a School Resource Officer, Scott has been my partner in training, my white board, my go to in all things law enforcement. His knowledge is vast. He is a much sought-after speaker, trainer for law enforcement with a unique sense of what to teach and when to interject a bit of humor and props. Scott assisted me with designing a training entitled “Threat Assessments for Large Facilities” after 9/11. This training won recognition by DHS and we were awarded funding to keep this going, publish our findings, and work with the military on a combined CPTED and CARVER model for threat assessments. Wee conducted those trainings at: Liberty University; Regent University, Norfolk Airport, Richmond International Raceway, Kings Dominion, Valley View Mall, Short Pump Mall, Johnston Willis/Chippenham Hospital, Old Dominion University, and multiple churches and synagogues. Scott retired from law enforcement and was hired immediately by St. Catherine’s School as Security Director. He has flourished there and has made improvements to the schools’ overall security protecting the students, staff, and parents at each event.
Jody is the former Chief of Police from the Richmond Police Department during the riots that caused so many officers PTSD and increased the division between the community and the police. During the defund movement, Jody was steadfast in his dedication to the Rule of Law. As a former Richmond Police Crime Prevention Specialist, I knew Jody from his beginning. A former marine, he makes a BIG presence in any room he enters. Not just for his years of service, his stature, his experience as the SWAT Commander in Richmond, but for his honor and regard for all. He is remarkably astute at reading the room and making friends wherever he goes. He is much sought after for his skillset as a Leader and upon retiring from the Richmond Police Department, needed a bit of time to go through the multitude of offers for his “next career”. Currently at the Department of Wildlife Conservation as Training Manager, Jody’s story and next chapter is just beginning.
A former Fire Chief, current Roanoke Sheriff’s Department Deputy. He will make you laugh in an instant. He is a gentle soul with a big brain. His vast knowledge as a former EMT, Fire Chief, and Law Enforcement officer gives him a unique perspective in the entire realm of First Responders. Not only is he knowledgeable in a multitude of areas, but Mike will also be the first one to research and find the answer, take the class, and become proficient, JUST to be an asset. Dedicated to his profession, Mike straddles the fire/law enforcement world, and this passion to assist communities and people in need is for him, a great calling.
